Speed, Anchoring & Restrictions
A boating license is not legally required to navigate within 6 miles of the coast with a marine engine up to 40.8 HP. Our self-drive, bareboat rentals are perfectly calibrated within these legal parameters. However, prior sea experience is mandatory: it is not just a matter of licenses, it is an absolute requirement for your safety and the safety of others on the water.
Dropping a traditional anchor is strictly prohibited within the boundaries of the Portofino Marine Protected Area to protect the seabed. Instead, vessels must utilize dedicated, paid mooring buoy fields located at authorized sites: San Fruttuoso, Cala degli Inglesi, and Punta Chiappa. We will provide a comprehensive mooring briefing before your departure to ensure you avoid heavy environmental fines.
Inside the Marine Protected Area, the maximum speed limit is 5 knots, and vessels must operate strictly in displacement mode (no planing). Within 500 meters of the coastline, even outside the protected park zones, the legal speed limit is 8 knots. Local authorities strictly enforce these limits, and non-compliance results in severe financial penalties.
Jet skis and water-skiing are completely banned throughout the entire marine reserve. It is strictly prohibited to discharge waste, bilge water, or any polluting substances into the sea, or to disturb the local marine wildlife. Recreational daytime diving is permitted exclusively within designated Zone C sectors, safely away from primary vessel mooring fields.
Every vessel in our fleet departs fully equipped with all legally mandated maritime safety equipment, including certified life jackets, distress signals, fire extinguishers, and a marine first-aid kit. For solo navigation or evening trips, wearing a life jacket is strictly mandatory and non-negotiable.
